Wolf's Print

Author bio picture-Philmont 2021

Harrison Woods, Associate sports editor, staff writer

When Harrison Woods was eight he won First Place and Best in Show in the Arizona State Sair for a photograph of a baby hummingbird that he has no memory of taking. This was the height and end of his photography career. You may recognize him from the marching field where he is the percussion section leader. Or from the band stand where he plays drums for several ensembles. He also served as senior patrol leader for two years and is currently junior assistant scoutmaster for BSA troop 343. As he is a senior this is Harrison’s first year and last year in Wolf’s Print.

Harrison’s room is cluttered with many books. As he is writing this biography a book by Umberto Eco is valiantly holding up a stack of books written by authors such as Noam Chomsky, Carl Jung, Virginia Woolf, George Orwell, Plato, Alexi de Tocqueville, and Douglass Adams. All who have profound ideas which he doesn’t understand at all. This stack urgently needs to be removed because, as it is directly over him when he is at his desk, any sudden movement would send them toppling down on his head. Maybe there's something symbolic about getting hit in the head with books. Most of what he has read recently have been non-fiction ranging from philosophy and history to political theory and semiotics, but thanks to a college program he participated in this summer he was forced to read Mrs. Dalloway, which has rekindled his interest in fiction. If you asked him why he loved reading he would only be able to respond with what Sherman Alexie wrote. That is “My father loved books, and since I loved my father with an aching devotion, I decided to love books as well,".

When the year ends he will be working as a ranger at Philmont Scout Ranch, a family tradition which he and his brother have chosen to start. There is only one college he is really interested in, and that is St. John's College (the Annapolis campus more specifically). After that he has not decided.
